Slovenian Mediterranean and Slovenian Tuscany.
HIGHLIGHTS
The diversity of Slovenia’s landscape is an appealing attraction in itself. Although you will encounter stunning natural and cultural treasures almost everywhere you go throughout the country, this time, through cultural insights, visits to natural attractions and tasting local food, we invite you to discover two destinations that simply must be added to your travel list.
ITINERARY
The bus will depart at 7am from Maribor or from an agreed place for groups. The journey begins with a drive via Gorica and onwards past Solkan to Goriška Brda. Our first stop will be at a lookout tower that, on a clear day, provides a 360° view of the surroundings far and wide. There are hills and vineyards as far as the eye can see. Goriška Brda is fairly well known, especially among those who like to eat and drink well, as the region is known for its many hilltop vineyards, wineries, wine shops, fruit growers and tourist farms.
The hilly pre-Alpine world, with its strong Mediterranean influence, is home to many vintners. We will visit a family estate that has one of the oldest wine cellars far and wide. Their wines, which have received numerous awards, are aged in a completely renovated mansion that was built by the Counts of Gorizia in the 13th century.
Goriška Brda’s unspoilt natural gifts of nature also offer an inexhaustible source of inspiration in the preparation of new culinary experiences. We will sit down together for a gourmet 5-course lunch in a restaurant where the chefs prepare food that reflects their love of cooking, respect for their roots and local customs and traditions. The dishes also ranked among the elite Michelin plates in 2020 and received the MICHELIN Plate designation.
Our journey will continue to the most idyllic village, which can be seen from everywhere in Brda, as it “stands like an eagle’s nest on a very scenic hill” (verse: poet Alojz Gradnik). It used to be a military fortress, but today is a romantic settlement where one has the feeling that time has stopped.
Next, you will settle into your overnight accommodation at one of the homesteads in the midst of unspoilt nature, and before turning in for the night, we will go for a pleasant short hike in the embrace of the hills, where our bodies and minds can be at one while taking in the beautiful nature at sunset.
Early next morning we will walk to see the beautiful natural pools of a local stream, which is one of the many natural sights protected as a listed cultural monument. Following our refreshing morning walk, we will enjoy a delicious outdoor breakfast from a basket full of Brda delights.
Our journey will continue back on board the bus for a drive to the Slovenian coast. We will take a tour of the city of Koper, walk through the city centre and learn about the stories of its past. After the tour, we will take time for a stroll by the sea or a coffee before driving to a homestead, where we will take part in a workshop on making cooling bath salts. All participants will make their own product, and in addition to the pleasant atmosphere and interesting tales, refreshing drinks and fruit snacks will be provided.
We will next drive to a viewing platform, where we will enjoy snacks in the form of tasty Istrian proscuitto, local sheep’s cheese and, of course, freshly baked bread and a glass of wine, before heading off for the final part of our adventure – a visit to a nearby homestead, where you will be served authentic Istrian dishes before heading home. Many visitors to the area are impressed by the local culinary delicacies, such as fusi pasta with truffles, frittata with wild asparagus, prosciutto, bobiči stew and others, and spread the word about Istria far and wide and return time and again.
