Escape into the embrace of the Emerald river.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Slovenian part of the Alps lies right on their outskirts, hence many foreigners are not familiar with this beautiful part of the high mountains. The Slovenian Julian Alps are situated at the crossroads of three countries. Tromeja, which means ‘three borders’, is a summit close to Kranjska Gora where Slovenia, Austria and Italy meet.
Itinerary
The bus will depart at 7am (min 9 people, max 18 people) from Ljubljana or from an agreed place for groups. The journey begins with a drive towards Jesenice and onwards towards Kranjska Gora. We will make a short stop at one of Slovenia’s most beautiful natural gems – Lake Jasna – which in the morning is framed by the beautiful outlines of the mountains rising up in the background. We will rest our bodies and minds, organise our thoughts, then continue our journey with a drive up the windy road to Slovenia’s highest mountain pass and on into a valley of endless stories.
We will hear a number of stories based on real events as well as folk legends that portray the different times and lives of people in the area. The creators of the film ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ also recognised the unique beauty of the nature in this area, and shot some exciting scenes of the famous film by the emerald Soča river.
We will stop at one of the most beautiful natural features of the Soča river, which is an important and valuable part of Triglav National Park. The highest and most mighty peaks of the Julian Alps rise up right above the valley. Numerous circular, hiking, walking and theme trails offer a unique experience in what is considered by many to be the most beautiful part of the Julian Alps. We will also set off on one of these trails together.
The people who live alongside the Soča river have long been known for their delicious home-made food. The local specialities are čompe with curd cheese, frika, delicious Kobarid štruklji and Bovec krafi dumplings, as well as Tolminc and Bovec cheeses, both of which have been prized for centuries and have been designated as having a protected origin. We will then pay a visit to a local homestead, where we will be served a delicious homemade lunch.
We will continue our way towards the confluence of the Koritnica and Šumnik streams, where the waters are constantly carving out and deepening the stone riverbeds. We will stop at a mighty fortress and learn about hidden stories from the past. After reboarding the bus, we will continue our journey towards the valley of a hundred waterfalls. We will stop at a village whose image, together with that of the valley in which it lies, changed forever in the year 2000 due to a landslide. The village is home to the World War I Austro-Hungarian Military Cemetery, which contains concrete sculptures of Austrian warriors, which we will visit, as well as a waterfall near the mine tunnel and other sights.
Our journey continues with a drive across a previously strategically important mountain pass, along the former trade road, where commerce took place between Carinthia, Gorizia and Friuli. Our final stop is at one of Italy’s famous lakes, which is surrounded by beautiful nature and mighty peaks, followed by a drive home via Italy.
