HIGHLIGHTS
There are a huge number of hidden corners in our beautiful country that many people don’t know. A piece of landscape stretches between the Karst edge and the Adriatic Sea where the climate is especially pleasant, the soil generous, and the people very hospitable. Join us for a day trip through Goriska Brda, where will learn about the life and work of locals, enjoy good food and wine, find out stories of small villages and end with a short walk on which we will discover a part of the cultural heritage of this wonderful countryside.
ITINERARY
The bus will depart at 7am from Maribor (min 9 people, max 18 people) or from an agreed place for groups. The journey begins with a drive via Gorica and onwards past Solkan to Goriška Brda. Our first stop will be at a lookout tower that, on a clear day, provides a 360° view of the surroundings far and wide. There are hills and vineyards as far as the eye can see. Goriška Brda is fairly well known, especially among those who like to eat and drink well, as the region is known for its many hilltop vineyards, wineries, wine shops, fruit growers and tourist farms.
Given the fact that there are as many as 150 vintners in the region, and that no trip to the area would be complete without a visit to at least one wine cellar, we will start our day with a visit to a famous wine cellar. After a tour, we will taste some of their most famous varieties of wine with an accompanying light snack.
This beautiful landscape is not only home to wine and cherries; many crafts have also developed here. We will take part in a workshop in which a local artisan will tell us how we can use less industrial chemicals at home and show us how to make homemade cosmetic aids. Of course, you will also be able to take your home-made product home with you.
Our journey will continue to the most idyllic village, which can be seen from everywhere in Brda, as it “stands like an eagle’s nest on a very scenic hill” (verse: poet Alojz Gradnik). It used to be a military fortress, but today is a romantic settlement where one has the feeling that time has stopped.
In the afternoon we will continue our journey by driving to a nearby hill. We will visit an idyllic tourist farm, where we will be served dishes based on typical recipes for Brda and Friulian cuisine using plenty of herbs, and where they work on the principle of ‘we cook what we pick’. Armed with a picnic basket filled with goodies, we will set off among the olive trees and set up a picnic area where we will enjoy a good home-made lunch and the beautiful view of the landscape down below.
Late in the afternoon, the last adventure of our one-day trip awaits – we will fortify our bodies and souls by taking a pleasant short hike during which we will be acquainted with the story of the famous Slovenian poet Alojz Gradnik. The trail leads through vineyards to the centre of the village of Brda, along the western border of the country where ‘our language is still spoken’, before getting back on board the bus for the return journey, pleasantly tired and full of lasting memories.
