HIGHLIGHTS
Would you like to taste the Slovenian Istria Mediterranean? This trip will combine cuisine, art and hidden experiences into one pleasant excursion. Join us for Mediterranean cuisine culinary workshops where we will spend the night outdoors, eat good local seasonal food, pamper ourselves in saunas and jaccuzzis, learn about picking wild plants, get active on the farm, and let a tourist guide show us the hidden rural gems of nature and in the village. Join us for a completely different kind of trip that will strengthen the body and mind.
ITINERARY
The bus will depart at 7am from Maribor or from an agreed place for groups. The journey begins with a drive towards Ljubljana and onward towards the Karst. Before heading towards the coast, we will stop for a fun and relaxing experience – a treasure hunt! Through this fun game, we will discover cultural and historical sights, learn about important people associated with the area, and revive famed tales that are slowly sinking into oblivion.
After the pleasant gathering, our journey will lead us to another wonderful experience. We will visit a homestead that cultivates various types of lavender, where we will learn everything about lavender, visit lavender fields and the drying room, and taste a lavender-based drink in a typical Karst courtyard.
Since it will now be well past noon, it will be time for a snack. We will taste some of the excellent flavours of the Karst, which are a mixture of tradition and modernity, and learn about the traditional processing of prosciutto and other meats and, of course, try them. This will be followed by a tasting of exceptional cheeses produced by the three best Karst cheesemakers. All the above will be served with home-baked bread made from flour ground on a stone and served with the finest Karst wine.
After the tasting session we will get back on board the bus for the drive towards the coast, where you will check into your room in a local homestead, have a rest, then get ready for the start of the ‘Relaxing
Next morning, your hosts will prepare an excellent ‘cleansing’ snack from their home-made products, then we will go on a guided tour of the homestead’s own herb garden and try our hands at one of the seasonal chore, which could involve pruning trees, mowing the lawn, working in the apiary, picking grapes, bottling and canning their products… or a little of everything. We’ll find out on the day! After a short break, we will participate in a workshop on canning seafood with a practical demonstration of canning. After the workshop, we will enjoy ‘elevensies in the field’, where we eat and drink like farmers in the Istrian fields in the past.
In the afternoon we will visit a wine cellar that produces natural wines, which, of couse, we will taste, while finding out about the natural vinification and maturation procedures. Our evening meal will comprise a 5-course menu based on the principle of ‘We eat what we have’. Dinner is followed by an overnight stay in a pre-selected type of accommodation.
Breakfast featuring local seasonal products will be served on the terrace, then we will head into the forest, where we will carry out some interesting work, the details of which will be revealed in due course! After ‘work’ we will have a picnic by an open fire, then take part in a workshop on cooking over an open fire. Our third and final day will end with a chance to explore the hidden corners of the Slovenian coast, followed by the final touch – dinner – before returning home.
