ITINERARY
Itinerary
- Departure from the main bus station in Ljubljana at 8:00.
- Arrival at the Coast in the early morning. First we will visit the castle Strmec (Socerb), which is the only major fortification on the Karst edge above the coast and offers a magnificent view of the Gulf of Koper and Trieste and the surrounding areas, all the way to Piran.
- Next is a tour of Hrastovelj – a clustered village from the late Middle Ages, known mainly for the Church of St. Trinity, which is painted inside with Gothic frescoes from 1490. The frescoes show the creation of the world, among them the most famous painting is called the Dance of the Dead. This is also the most famous part of the frescoes and represents an extraordinary achievement of medieval iconography.
- From Hrastovelj we will go to the city of Koper, where we will first see the old town. We will ascend to the City Tower, from where there is a beautiful view of Koper and its surroundings, and then the Praetorian Palace, built in the 13th century.
- Next is a visit to the Provincial Museum, which is the most extensive museum in Slovenian Istria with rich collections from prehistory to the splendor of Venetian times and recent history.
- The visit is followed by a longer lunch break, swimming on the city beach or exploring the city on your own.
- After lunch, we will walk through the Škocjanski zatok nature reserve, which is only a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and see many species of birds and other interesting animal and plant species.
- Next is a visit to the Sečovlje Salina Landscape Park, where the past and the present go hand in hand. The more than 700-year-old tradition of salt-making is still marked by the traditional hand-picking of salt on salt plots.
- The final dinner will follow at the Karjola Inn in Marezige, where we will try a rich selection of traditional Istrian dishes and locally produced refošk.
- We will return to Ljubljana in the late evening.
