Escape into the embrace of the Emerald river.
HIGHLIGHTS
Most people spend far too much time in front of the TV and computer, on their phones or in their cars. Although we are aware that this isn’t a healthy lifestyle, it can be very difficult to find the time and energy to change. We may try to live a healthy life, but in doing so we forget the lack of nature – fresh air, lakes, rivers, streams, mountains, hills, oceans, forests, meadows … Therefore, we invite you to join us for a wonderful nature trip. We will travel around the fringes of the Julian Alps, enjoying the natural beauty and tales that portray the different times and lives of people in this area.
Itinerary
The bus will depart at 7am (min 9 people, max 18 people) from Ljubljana or from an agreed place for groups. The journey begins with a drive towards Radovljica and on to Bled. We won’t visit Bled’s main tourist attractions, but we will go to one of the most beautiful vantage points from where there is a beautiful view of Lake Bled and its surroundings. After a short walk around the lake, we will stop for coffee, and enjoy a sweet treat in the form of Bled’s most famous Bled dessert before continuing our journey.
The journey continues with a drive through the Upper Sava Valley, which is known for its many ethnographic gems. It was also described several times by Sir Humphry Davy, an Englishman who spread the word about the beauties of the valley. We will visit the Slovenian Alpine Museum, which is a unique centre of Slovenia’s Alpine and mountaineering world, and take a walk through the permanent exhibition with its inspiring concept titled ‘The path is a story, the story is the path’.
Nearby, beneath one of Slovenia’s most attractive mountains, there are two beautiful waterfalls that we simply must visit along the way. We will visit them on foot then on the way back we will stop at a mountain pasture, where we will be served an excellent and well-deserved lunch.
After lunch we will get back on board the bus to travel to our final stop for the day, which is located in the northern part of Triglav National Park and touches the overgrown forest of Mt. Vitranc. The area was declared a nature reserve in 1992 as it offers a home to many endangered animal and plant species. We will have a short break then continue to a world-famous place – the valley beneath the Ponca mountains – which has been attracting the cream of the world’s professional ski jumpers for decades. We will take a look at the ski jump ramps, where fearless ski jumpers set new milestones over and over again. We will then drive to a nearby hotel where you will settle into your room before having dinner at a local restaurant in the centre of the Upper Sava Valley.
Before breakfast, we will walk to a nearby lake, which in the morning is framed by the beautiful outlines of the mountains rising up in the background. We will rest our bodies and minds, organise our thoughts and enjoy a delicious and healthy breakfast by the lake in the midst of nature.
Our journey will continue by driving up the windy road to reach the highest Slovenian road pass to reach a valley of endless stories. Our first stop today is to see an important World War II memorial and learn a number of stories based on real events as well as folk legends that portray the different times and lives of people in the area. The creators of the film ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ also recognised the unique beauty of the nature in this area, and shot some exciting scenes of the famous film by the emerald Soča river.
After a short stop at the top of the pass, we will continue our way on towards the Soča river valley, which is an important and valuable part of Triglav National Park. Numerous circular, hiking, walking and theme trails offer a unique experience in what is considered by many to be the most beautiful part of the Julian Alps. We will also set off on one of these trails together.
The people who live alongside the Soča river have long been known for their delicious home-made food. The local specialities are čompe with curd cheese, frika, delicious Kobarid štruklji and Bovec krafi dumplings, as well as Tolminc and Bovec cheeses, both of which have been prized for centuries and designated as having a protected origin. It could be said that in the valley, cattle grazing and milk processing go hand in hand in the making of cheese. The entire Upper Soča valley is dotted with mountain pastures with high-lying farms, which testifies to a strong tradition. We will also pay a visit to a local homestead, where we will try their traditional products.
Our journey will lead us on towards Bovec. Enroute we will make a short stop to see another natural attraction, which adds a piece to the mosaic of this idyllic location which bears the hallmark of the alpine beauty of the Soča river. The river provides the landscape with its recognisable image, but there are also many other rivers and streams that, together with the Soca river, create beautiful images of nature. The Tolminka and Zadlaščica streams have carved deep troughs into the rocks forming a gorge, which is the lowest point of Triglav National Park and one of the most popular tourist spots in the Tolmin region, which, of course, we will visit along the way.
After our walk, we will continue our journey to the place where the emerald beauty pauses briefly on its way from Trenta to the sea. At Most na Soči, there is an artificial accumulation lake on the Soča river, which is the biggest attraction in the village today. We will board a boat for a journey around the lake and have a light lunch on board.
After lunch, we will board the bus to return to Ljubljana via Idrija and conclude the trip full of wonderful memories.
