Slovenian Mediterranean and Slovenian Tuscany.
ITINERARY
The bus will depart at 7am from Ljubljana (min 10 people) or from an agreed place for groups. The journey begins with a drive via Gorica and onwards past Solkan to Goriška Brda. Our first stop will be at a lookout tower that, on a clear day, provides a 360° view of the surroundings far and wide. There are hills and vineyards as far as the eye can see. Goriška Brda, also referred to by some as ‘Slovenian Tuscany’ is fairly well known, especially among those who like to eat and drink well, as the region is known for its many hilltop vineyards, wineries, wine shops, fruit growers and tourist farms.
Given the fact that there are as many as 150 vintners in the region, and that no trip to the area would be complete without a visit to at least one wine cellar, we will start our day with a visit to a famous wine cellar. After a tour, we will taste some of their most famous varieties of wine with an accompanying light snack.
Our journey will continue to the most idyllic village, which can be seen from everywhere in Brda, as it “stands like an eagle’s nest on a very scenic hill” (verse: poet Alojz Gradnik). It used to be a military fortress, but today is a romantic settlement where one has the feeling that time has stopped.
Full of impressions of the beautiful landscape, we will continue our journey with a drive for lunch to a local the homestead. In some way, Brda’s cuisine is Mediterranean, as well as being incredibly resourceful and creative. It is full of attractive traditional features combined with revamped new combinations. We will try krodegine and markandele and wash it all down with some homemade tropinovec or mathaneg.
After an excellent lunch, our journey will lead us further into the valley of the emerald Soča river, where a popular natural landmark creates a picture perfect image, hidden from the everyday world by high walls. We will walk to the stone hall and see one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia.
The day will end with a gourmet dinner in a restaurant that is on the list of the 50 best in the world, where an exceptional world-renowned chef and recipient of two Michelin stars creates culinary masterpieces. We will be treated to a 23-course menu with accompanying wines (dinner lasts approx. 3 hours).
Following our gourmet dinner, we will drive to a homestead, where we will spend the night.
After an excellent home-made breakfast, we will head for the lowest point of Triglav National Park, to a natural attraction that adds a piece to the mosaic of the idyllic location and alpine beauty of the Soča river. The unique beauty of this area was also recognised by the creators of the film ‘Chronicles of Narnia’, who shot some exciting scenes of the famous film by the emerald river. Numerous circular, hiking, walking and them trails offer a unique experience in this area, which, according to many, is the most beautiful part of the Julian Alps. We will also set off together on one of these trails.
After our pleasant walk, it will be time to pamper our tastebuds again with a visit to a local homestead, where we will be served a delicious homemade lunch. The people who live alongside the Soča river have long been known for their delicious home-made food. The local specialities are čompe with curd cheese, frika, delicious Kobarid štruklji and Bovec krafi dumplings, as well as Tolminc and Bovec cheeses, both of which have prized for centuries and have been designated as having a protected origin. It could be said that in the valley, cattle grazing and milk processing go hand in hand in the making of cheese.
After lunch, we will drive across the highest Slovenian mountain pass to the Upper Sava Valley, which lies in the extreme northwest of Slovenia, right next to the border with Austria and Italy. We will stop at a beautiful lake in which the surrounding mountains are reflected. We will pause to rest our bodies and souls, before making the short walk to Kranjska gora, where we will stroll through the village centre, have another coffee, and then get on board the bus for the drive home.
